Albert, a serving senator representative of the Northeast district is a former PDP member, who defected to YPP July where he secured the party’s ticket for the 2023 gubernatorial’s.
Bassey Albert, has been sentenced to 42 years in prison on Thursday for corruption.
It was reported that Justice Agatha Anulika Okeke of the Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, on Thursday, convicted and sentenced Albert who was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2019 had indicted Albert on a six-count charge of allegedly taking chattel of six vehicles worth N204 million when he was the finance commissioner in the state. He was said to have collected one of the vehicles from Jide Omokore, an associate of Diezani Alison Madueke, a former minister of petroleum. Omokore reportedly had dealings with the state when he offered Bassey the vehicle.
Delivering her verdict, the Presiding Judge Agatha Okeke found the Senator guilty of the offences. Accordingly, he was sentenced to Ikot Ekpene Correctional Centre to serve his jail term.
