TB on The Rise in Bayelsa – TB Centre Raises Alarm

The Bayelsa State Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Center has decried the increasing cases of tuberculosis among residents in the state.

Program Manager of the centre, Dr Mabel Emudiaga-Ohwerhi disclosed this while speaking to newsmen in Yenagoa the Bayelsa State capital saying ignorance, inadequate awareness and denial are some of the reasons why more persons are coming down with tuberculosis.

Dr Emudiaga-Ohwerhi noted that Bayelsans need to be wary of tuberculosis as five in every ten suspected case has the disease and it is fast spreading in all local government areas of the state.

She explained that tuberculosis is an airborne disease with symptoms such as persistent coughing, fever, unexplained weight loss, drenching night sweat among others.Gas Flaring and Exploration The Root Cause of Poverty in Niger Delta- HOMEF
She further explained that everyone is at risk of having tuberculosis hence all persons should look out for these symptoms among their families, neighbors and environment.

” The tuberculosis burden in Bayelsa state is high, anyone can come down with it through coughing or sneezing from an infected person, so everyone should be concerned”

Dr Mabel Emudiaga-Ohwerhi called on all Bayelsans to visit any health facility in the state to access tuberculosis treatment adding that the test, drugs and treatment for tuberculosis is free.

She pointed out that it is important to seek treatment for tuberculosis early to avoid drug resistant tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis test and treatment can be accessed in almost all health facilities in all the local government areas of Bayelsa state.
