Residents of various communities in the Warri SouthWest Council in Delta state have cried out over several years of neglect by Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC operating in their environment.

The young and elderly in the community staged a protest and shut down fifteen oil wells operated by the SPDC saying they have not carried out their social responsibility.

Spokesman of the community, Mr David Mamman said despite the presence of the oil company, the community has no electricity, no portable water and no internal roads hence the need for a protest to change their situation.

The youths of the communities said they have given support to SPDC by creating a peaceful environment for tbem to carry out their business but the company has been insensitive to the plight of the host communities.

The elderly men and women are of the opinion that the state government should take proactive steps to make the oil company meet their demands.

SPDC Media Relations Officer, Mr Bamidele Odugbesan said the company is currently having fruitful discussions with the state authorities to resolve the issues and restore peace in the area.
