NIGER DELTA – The people of the Niger Delta have cried out over the negative effect of illegal refining in their environment.

They say the activities of oil and gas exploration has caused so much environmental pollution and most recently black soot in the region.

As part of addressing matters of public importance, lawmakers in the country have also supported the people of the Niger Delta by calling for a review of the licences of operators of oil refineries as well as to issue new licences to competent operators with a view to ending environmental damages to the region.

They are asking government agencies to ensure proper scrutiny before giving licenses for oil refineries as their activities are more disadvantageous to the region.

They equally called for the government to put measures in place for clearing black soot found in parts of Rivers, Bayelsa and other Niger Delta states by arresting and prosecuting those involved in illegal refining.
