In YenagoaBrass Traditional Rulers Hails Douye Diri for Ground Breaking– The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has expressed a cynical view of the seven nominations recently made by President Muhammadu Buhari to the National Assembly to fill the vacant ministerial positions in his cabinet.
According to the IYC, though the nominations made by Buhari with the inclusion of an Ijaw Indigene to represent Rivers State is commendable, however, the president should employ the same speed and zeal to immediately set up a substantive board for the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC to further drive the development of the region.
The spokesman of the youth alm of the Ijaw nation, Ebilade Ekerefe noted that the decision by Buhari to push forward the seven ministerial nominees for clearance at the National Assembly is purely personal and political.
According to him, the need for the immediate setting up of a substantive board for the NDDC should be selfless and a response to the yearning of the people of the Niger Delta region.
Ekerefe opined that despite the nomination of a kinsman as a ministerial nominee, “we want to restate our call on President Muhammadu Buhari to respond to the destress call of the entire Niger Delta region for the immediate constitution of a substantive board for the NDDC.
“It is unfortunate that most of the quick responses to issues by President Buhari are misdirected and not in response to the popular demands by the people.”
The IYC spokesman, in a statement made in Yenagoa, expressed sadness over “Buhari’s contempt to the people of the Niger delta as he continues to pay deaf ears to the people’s outcries despite the peace in the region which has culminated into the stable oil production of the country.”
He, therefore, appealed to Buhari to do the right thing by appointing a board that will cater to the development of the oil-rich region and write his name in the annals of history.
